PCT Tainan Presbytery Church and Society Committee held its 4th “Bible
Storytelling in

Taiwanese Competition” on May 15 at Tainan Theological College and Seminary.
As many as

57 children and teenagers participated in the competition.

The contest required children and teens to use Taiwanese to recite, retell, or
reenact Bible

stories. It gave participants an opportunity to learn from one another and
hone their Taiwanese

speaking skills. Performances on that day were impressive and the audience
responded with

>enthusiastic applause and loud cheers.

According to Tainan Presbytery, the number of people who signed up to compete
this year

doubled from last year. Presbytery leaders hope the competition will encourage
everyone to

practice and promote Taiwanese – their mother language.

The competition included a “kindergarten division”, an “elementary school
division”, and a

“high school division”. Some participants creatively added commercial taglines
or involved the

audience in their performance to make their presentation more original. The
array of creative

and colorful costumes on that day also kept the audience’s eyes riveted on the
stage.

According to one Sunday school teacher from East Gate Barclay Memorial Church,
churches

usually provide many Bible stories that children can choose from for their
performance. The

contest is a wonderful opportunity for children to familiarize with the Bible
and practice self-

>confidence on stage.

The competition is also trains children to trust God in their everyday lives,
said this teacher.

She added that, on numerous occasions, she had to remind children who become
nervous at

>one point or another to rely on God.

An added benefit of this competition is that it involves parents in the
preparation process, thus

increasing the amount of time parents spend with their children. Through such
opportunities,

parents and children can build stronger and more intimate relationships with
one another.
