New York bishop supports Islamic center

   NEW YORK (UMNS)â The United Methodist bishop for metropolitan New 
York has
   announced his support for the building of an Islamic community 
center and
   mosque near ground zero. To deny such religious freedom, Bishop 
Jeremiah
   Park said Sept. 1, "makes us less as Americans and weaker as a 
nation." Some
   opponents consider the close location to the former World Trade 
Center site
   to be insensitive to those who lost loved ones there.

Floods threaten 'core of Pakistan'

   NEW YORK (UMNS)âThe floodwaters covering Pakistan are sweeping 
away homes
   and crops and destroying the country's schools, health-care 
centers and
   roads - the essence of its social system. That is why faith groups 
must
   support relief efforts alongside international governments, says a 
United
   Methodist working there for Church World Service. "This crisis is 
so big it
   threatens the core of Pakistan," declared Sidney Traynham.

Second pastor is crucial for new churches

   LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. (UMNS)âThe appointment of a second pastor to 
a new
   church start is a crucial point in that congregation's survival, a 
United
   Methodist Board of Discipleship executive said. The Rev. Gary A. 
Shockley,
   executive director of the agency's New Church Starts Division, 
Path 1, spoke
   to  72  newly  appointed  district superintendents and 10 
directors of
   connectional ministries attending an orientation session Aug. 
29-Sept. 3.
   Shockley said agency staff in congregational development need to 
put more
   thought into providing guidance to bishops and their cabinets on 
those
   second appointments, too. "Keep checking on your new churches," he 
said.
   "Keep an eye on the handoff to the second leader."
