"We know that God hears our prayers, and we prayed that God will
help us to
be independent and live in peace. We want our children's future to
be
different than the painful past we have endured." - The Rev. Isaac
Sebit, a
United Methodist pastor in Southern Sudan.

United Methodist Women register to vote in Southern Sudan

JUBA, Southern Sudan (UMNS) - Members of United Methodist Women in
Southern
Sudan are joining their neighbors in enthusiastically registering
to vote in
a January referendum on whether their war-torn land will split off
from the
north of the country. Paul Jeffrey reports that the women were
among the
first in line in the village of Pisak, Central Equatoria State,
when the
17-day registration period began Nov. 15.

Immigrant students hope bill opens doors

LOS ANGELES (UMNS) - Carlos Amador, 25, and Sofia Campos, 20,
grew up
thinking they could be part of the great American dream that
promises hard
work and perseverance lead to prosperity and success. The two
bright,
talented young people are waking up to the reality that despite
excelling in
academics and devoting a large portion of their time to community
service,
their dreams will probably not come true. They are two of more
than 800,000
young people who could benefit from passage of the Development,
Relief and
Education for Alien Minors Act or DREAM Act.

Africa University students combat HIV/AIDS

MUTARE, Zimbabwe (UMNS) - They say that "knowledge is power."
Perhaps the
better phrase is "Power comes from using knowledge wisely." On
World AIDS
Day, the Student Peer Network at United Methodist-related Africa
University
in Mutare, Zimbabwe, stands ready to empower students by providing
education
about HIV/AIDS, and promoting behavioral changes to prevent
spreading the
disease among students and the surrounding community.

Church offers AIDS tests

HOUSTON (UMTV) - The health department in Houston estimates that 1
in 93
city residents lives with HIV. For African Americans, it's 1 in
40. And up
to a quarter of these people don't know they are infected. A
United
Methodist church is speaking openly about this subject in order to
save
   lives.
