âSome nights, I would not bring down the net because I was very
tired and
would doze off only to wake up after mosquitoes have bitten me and
the
child.â â Francess Beecher, mother in Sierra Leone

Mother pays highest price of malaria

BO, Sierra Leone (UMNS) â Francess Beecher knows the staggering
cost that
can result from just one mosquito bite. In September, she lost her
firstborn, 2-year-old Jonathan, to malaria. Although Beecher
received an
insecticide-treated bed net when she delivered her son at the
village health
center, she did not use it regularly. Now five months pregnant,
Beecher, 18,
is hopeful her next child will enjoy a long life and plans to use
the nets
   properly.

Imagine No Malaria joins JUMO network

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â A new social network for changing the
world has
just launched, and The United Methodist Churchâs Imagine No
Malaria campaign
has wasted no time in taking advantage of it. Jumo, created by
Facebook
founder Chris Hughes, has plenty of potential, said the Rev. Larry
Hollon,
top executive of United Methodist Communications.

Heartsong UMC hosts interfaith meal

CORDOVA, Tenn. (UMNS) â As Christians and Muslims came
together
at [20]Heartsong United Methodist Church for an interfaith
Thanksgiving meal
on Nov. 23, it seemed âonly appropriateâ that a Jew say the
blessing. Thatâs
how Heartsong Pastor Steve Stone introduced Aviva Frye to say
grace for more
than 350 diners in Heartsongâs Celebration Center.

United Methodist programs help teens go to college

LINCOLN, Neb. (UMNS) â The transition from high school to college
can
challenge any student, but itâs especially daunting for teens
from
low-income homes â who may also be the first in their family to
seek higher
education. Through a variety of initiatives, many of the 98
United
Methodist-related colleges and universities are helping these
students
embrace college culture and learn what resources are available to
help them
   advance their education.
