"Count me among the United Methodists who believe the Bush Library
and
Institute will only make SMU better and stronger for generations
present and
for those to come. I look forward to the opening." â James L.
"Skip"
Rutherford III, dean of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of
Public
                                  Service.

Politics should not overshadow Bush library

DALLAS (UMNS) â "Presidential libraries can be controversial as
critics
often think contemporarily rather than historically," writes James
L. "Skip"
Rutherford III in a commentary about the George W. Bush
Presidential Center
at Southern Methodist University. "The college experience is about
the open
exchange of opinions and views. The Bush library and institute
will only
enhance that exchange at a fine school like SMU. How can that be
anything
but positive?" Rutherford coordinated the construction of the
Clinton
Presidential Center in Little Rock, Ark. He is also past chairman
of the
administrative board at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in
Little
   Rock.

Malaria threat pervades life in Sierra Leone

BO, Sierra Leone (UMNS) â Thanks to international organizations
including
The United Methodist Church, more than 3 million
insecticide-treated bed
nets are spreading across a country sick and dying of malaria.
Malaria is a
leading cause of death in this African country. The denomination's
Imagine
No Malaria campaign is helping people like Musukula Lukulay, 30,
whose
husband and children have had malaria several times. The whole
household
stops when the family is ill, she says. "I feel helpless when my
husband or
children are ill. It's as if I have malaria, too."

Update: Pastor escalates spiritual fast for DREAM Act

SAN ANTONIO (UMNS) â The Rev. Lorenza Andrade Smith, a United
Methodist
pastor arrested Nov. 30 after a sit-in, is on a spiritual fast
and is
determined to remain jailed in solidarity with thousands of young
people
advocating for the DREAM Act. On Dec. 5 she escalated her fast and
will not
be accepting food or water. Her son is prayed for during an
interfaith
worship service at La Trindad United Methodist Church.

Church members ask to âDrop the I-Wordâ

WASHINGTON (UMNS) â Dehumanizing language should not be part of
the
conversation on U.S. immigration reform, says Erin M. Hawkins.
That is why
her agency, the United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race,
is urging
church members to join âDrop the I-Word,â a national campaign
calling for
the elimination of the word âillegalâ in such discussions. The
commission
is [20]using its website in a year-long attempt to gather 10,000
United
   Methodist pledges to the campaign.

Meharry receives grant to aid mental health patients obtain housing

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â The city's homeless population will
get
mental-health treatment and help to obtain stable housing
through a
federally funded program at Meharry Medical College, one of The
United
Methodist Church's historically black universities. Meharry's
department of
psychiatry and behavioral science received a $1.5 million grant
that will
fund the care for these patients from 2010 through 2015. Meharry
will get
more than $330,000 a year for the program, said Dr. Rahn Bailey,
chairman
the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at
[22]Meharry Medical
   College.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration gave
out $40
million over five years to community service organizations. It
targets
people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness because of
mental-health
   and substance-abuse issues.
