âWe face many challenges here. Malaria and HIV/AIDS can cause
premature
birth and, in some cases, death for both the mother and child.
Complications, such as hemorrhage, also occur.â â Christiana Tommy,
a nurse
                              in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone volunteers help save moms, babies

BO, Sierra Leone (UMNS) â Christiana Tommy is on a mission to
reduce
maternal and infant deaths in her community. Childbirth is never
easy,
especially in Sierra Leone, where the maternal and child mortality
rates are
among the highest in the world. In 19 years, Tommy has seen more
than her
share of maternal and infant deaths. But she and The United
Methodist Church
   are helping to save lives.

UMTV: Going Green for Funerals

MIDDLEBURG, Va. (UMTV) â Churches with a private cemetery used to
be a
familiar sight, but development has left many cities landlocked.
Eco-burial
offers an alternative. Clients can choose to have remains cremated
and
buried in the drip line of a tree. The process is
environmentally-friendly
and preserves natural forests. At a fraction of the price of a
traditional
funeral, green burial is gaining popularity. United Methodist Camp
Highroad
is a favorite summer camp in Virginia that has committed a section
of forest
as a green cemetery for the next 100 years.

Glamour magazine honors Liberian president

MONROVIA, Liberia (UMNS) â Liberiaâs President Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf, a
United Methodist who in 2005 became the first female elected
president of an
African country, is among five women heads of state being honored
as Glamour
magazineâs 2010 Women of the Year. Johnson Sirleaf, who spoke at
the
denominationâs top legislative gathering in 2008, has stressed
education,
the inclusion of women in government, and providing women with
vocational
skills and improving their employment opportunities.

Glamourâs other honorees at its Women of the Year event include:
Prime
Minister Jadranka Kosor of Croatia, Prime Minister Iveta
Radicová of
Slovakia, President Dalia Grybauskaite of Lithuania, and Prime
Minister
Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad and Tobago. Altogether, there
are now 18
women presidents and prime ministers in the world. In January,
that number
increases to 19 when Dilma Rousseff takes office as Brazilâs
president.

Lambuth University loses accreditation

   JACKSON, Tenn. (UMNS) â United Methodist-affiliated [18]Lambuth
University
in Jackson, Tenn., learned this week that the Southern
Association of
Colleges and Schools has denied renewal of the schoolâs
accreditation.
Lambuth President Bill Seymour announced at a press conference
Dec. 7 that
the school would appeal the decision. Accreditation and aid
eligibility will
remain in place during the appeal.
Delegates at the 2010 Memphis Annual (regional) Conference
voted to
apportion $405,000 in 2011 for the financially troubled school â
with
several conditions. If all conditions are not met, that money will
be given
to the Memphis Conference Division of Higher Education and Campus
Ministry
to form a Memphis Conference Scholarship Fund for 2011.
One of the conditions was that the school maintain approval by
the
University Senate as a United Methodist institution. The
University Senate
is the body that determines which learning institutions meet the
criteria
for listing as institutions affiliated with The United Methodist
Church.
While no action has been taken by the Senate, its [19]website
states: âTo
qualify for affiliation with The United Methodist Church,
institutions must
   maintain appropriate academic accreditation.â
