"People too often think that they'll go home for the holidays, and
it will
be different. They think, this year we'll all get along. Or I'll
see my
family again, and it will be a great thing. But they don't take into
account
that they can't undo perhaps years of dysfunctional relationships
in just
one holiday weekend." - Amy Birchill, director of St. Luke's
Center for
Counseling and Life Enrichment in Houston.

Help! My family stresses me out at Christmas

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - Sometimes expectations of Kodak moments
and hopes
for a holly, jolly holiday fall short at family gatherings.
Despite your
best efforts to prepare yourself for the worst in what are
supposed to be
the best of times, your plans can fall apart the minute the past
creeps back
into the present. But, even then, God is present.

Christmas memories sustain grieving families

INDIANAPOLIS (UMNS) - This will be the first Christmas for Indiana
Area
Bishop Michael J. Coyner and his family since the death of his
mother. So
like many who have lost loved ones in the past year, he realizes
it could be
a rather "Blue Christmas." "Simply going forward with the usual
joyful
activities is not always an easy choice when you have a lost a
loved one
since the last year's celebrations," he writes in a commentary.
"However, I
also know that good Christmas memories can carry us through tough
times and
   periods of grief."

United Methodists pray for peace in CÈte d'Ivoire

ABIDJAN, Côte d'Ivoire (UMNS) - Amid post-election violence, the
United
Methodist Church of CÈte d'Ivoire is calling for prayer and
trying to
reinforce its ministries to the people. The outcome of the West
African
nation's Nov. 28 presidential election is in dispute, leading to
renewed
tension in a country that has been trying to regain stability
following a
civil war earlier in this decade. Both the current president,
Laurent
Gbagbo, and his opponent, Allassane Ouattara, are claiming victory.

Senate fails to pass DREAM Act

WASHINGTON (UMNS) - The U.S. Senate failed to pass a bill that
would have
allowed illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. as children and
have lived
in the country for five years to gain conditional legal status
after
graduating from high school. United Methodist leaders
expressed
disappointment at the U.S. Senate's inability to bring the
DREAM
(Development, Relief & Education for Alien Minors) Act to a
vote,
effectively killing the legislation for this congressional session.

'Chrismon' tree graces Capitol Hill lobby

WASHINGTON (UMNS) - A special "Chrismon" tree stands in the lobby
of the
United Methodist Building on Capitol Hill. Taken from the Latin
phrase
"Christi Monogramma," or "monogram of Christ," Chrismons represent
the life
and ministry of Jesus Christ and of the Christian church. Last
year, a call
went out to church members to supply Chrismons for the tree, and
they
responded, with a particular effort made by the West Ohio Annual
(regional)
   Conference United Methodist Women.
