              for Southwestern Collegeâs first black graduate.

$3 million boosts malaria campaign

   LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. (UMNS) â The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in
   collaboration with the United Nations Foundation, has given a $3 million
   grant to the Imagine No Malaria campaign of The United Methodist Church.
   Pittsburgh Area Bishop Thomas Bickerton, the campaignâs spokesperson, said
   the grant would provide administrative support for fundraising to help the
   church reach its $75 million goal. [17]To date, more than $15 million has
   been raised for Imagine No Malaria. âIt gives us a boost in the next phase
   of the campaign,â Bickerton said.

Open leaders have open meetings

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) â In his blog, âFaith Media and Culture,â the Rev.
   Larry Hollon addresses the dilemma leaders face when deciding whether to

Southwestern honors first black grad

   WICHITA, Kan. (UMNS) â The first African-American graduate at Southwestern
   College in Winfield, Kan., was a faithful man of God, who gave his life to
   church ministry. Seven decades after his death, the Rev. Elijah Pilgrim
   Geiger and his unmarked grave have received the recognition they deserve.
   United Methodists from Kansas honored Geiger at a dedication ceremony Oct.
   16, in which a headstone for his grave was unveiled.

Candler scholar to discuss biblical mission

   ATLANTA (UMNS) â The Rev. W. Harrison Daniel, associate professor in the
   practice of history and mission at United Methodist-related Emory
   Universityâs Candler School of Theology, will explore how biblical texts
   inform understanding of mission and how mission informs reading of the
   Bible. The session, titled âThe Bible and the Churchâs Mission,â will be
   Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

11 women bishops head to Holy Land

   WASHINGTON (UMNS) â Eleven women bishops from the United States, West Indies
   and Africa, representing the United Methodist, Episcopal, African Methodist
   Episcopal and Christian Methodist Episcopal churches, will leave Nov. 12 for
   a 10-day trip to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. United Methodist Bishop
   Deborah Kiesey of the Dakotas Area, who is president of the denominationâs
   Board of Church and Society, will lead the delegation.
