“Vital congregations nurture growth in discipleship through mutual support
and accountability, and they cultivate intentional and mutual relationships
with the most vulnerable – the poor, children, the imprisoned, the
powerless.” — MaryJane Pierce Norton, leadership ministries executive at the
                           Board of Discipleship.

New tools add punch to vital congregations

WICHITA, Kan. (UMNS) — With Advent approaching, United Methodist
congregations are seeking new ways to attract visitors who will connect with
the church — and stay after Christmas. A Wichita congregation tried
something new last year, and the Rev. Nathan Stanton is still excited about
the results. Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, where Stanton is
senior pastor, was part of a pilot for the Innovative Leadership Project,
created by the United Methodist Board of Discipleship.

GORE, Okla. (UMTV) — Oklahoma restaurateur Steve Pool and fellow members of
Gore United Methodist Church have built churches in South Africa and Vietnam
and a hospice home in Costa Rica. The mission trips became the inspiration
for Soda Steve’s, a theme restaurant built to inspire people to volunteer.

Blog: Change is good—you go first!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — In his blog “Recent thoughts on church
planting,” the Rev. Gary Shockley, executive director of [19]Path 1, the
   denomination’s church-planting movement, writes about the denomination’s
need for change if it wants to be effective in ministry. “Pray, work hard,
expect things will change, work for the change, let go, and trust that God
is right smack dab in the middle of it all and out in front of it all!”

Irish Methodists build community center

NEW YORK (UMNS) — Methodist-related East Belfast Mission is building a
community center called Skainos with the help of missionaries, staff,
volunteers and community members of Ballymacarrett in Northern Ireland. Gary
Mason, the mission superintendent, recently visited the New York City
offices of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries with Mark
Houston, mission director, to build momentum for the center, scheduled for
completion in the fall of 2012.
