Japan relief efforts pay off

   NEW YORK (UMNS) -- By October, United Methodist Committee on Relief had
   received [20]$11.8 million for earthquake/tsunami relief and recovery work
   in Japan as Japanese-American Methodists moved quickly to find ways to raise
   money. Substantial grants already have been made to both Japanese and
   international partners.

Philippine clergywomen celebrate gains

   MANILA, The Philippines (UMNS) -- The largest gathering ever of Filipina
   pastors occurred in early October in a historic meeting in the Philippines.
   The meeting was sponsored by the [22]Board of Higher Education and Ministry,
   the denomination’s agency that oversees campus ministries and institutions
   of higher education.

First Vietnamese UMC in Arkansas

   FORT SMITH, Ark. (UMNS) -- Sunday, Oct. 9, marked an important event for
   the [24]South Central Jurisdiction and the [25]Arkansas Annual (regional)
   Conference. About 55 people gathered to break ground for the jurisdiction’s
   first Vietnamese United Methodist church, a 4,000-square-foot building in
   Fort Smith.

Obesity rising among faithful

   UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (UMNS) -- People who attended services or otherwise
   participated in organized religion weekly were 62 percent more likely to be
   obese than those who never participated, [27]according to a report from
   the [28]Association of Religion Data Archives.

A losing proposition for pastor

   FAYETTE, Mo. (UMNS) – The Rev. Eric Moore of [30]Paul H. Linn Memorial
   United Methodist Church found that the 100 pounds he shed had an unexpected
   consequence. His friends did not always recognize him. Moore tells

South Sudan focus of seminar

   MUTARE, Zimbabwe (UMNS) — [33]United Methodist-related Africa University in
   Mutare is holding a seminar on “South Sudan: Transformation and Nation
   Building” on Nov. 16-17. The gathering is the sixth annual Dag Hammarskjöld
   Commemorative Seminar, and it will include leaders of the world’s newest
   nation.
