Changhua Presbytery launches prayer chain ahead of presidential elections

Reported by Chen Wei-jien

Written by Lydia Ma

Changhua Presbytery recently launched a prayer chain wherein all of its 43
local churches will pray for 2 days each. The prayer chain already began on
October 31, 2011, and will continue on to January 24, 2012, or two days after
Taiwanese people go to the polls.

Besides praying for the upcoming presidential elections, a separate joint
prayer meeting is being planned for December 3, 2011. This prayer meeting will
be part of “Lift up my eyes to the hills prayer movement” spearheaded by the
PCT General Assembly.

Presbytery officials said that every Christian was welcome to attend the
meeting on December 3. As for the prayer chain lasting 86 days, prayer items
include praying for the creation of a nuclear-free Taiwan, praying for
spiritual growth and membership growth of PCT churches, and praying for the
upcoming presidential election in 2012.

The upcoming presidential election is being viewed by the presbytery as an
occasion for citizens to exercise their civic responsibility and ensure that no
political party colludes with Beijing and sells out Taiwan. Changhua Presbytery
Moderator, Rev. Li Chen-chien underscored that the purpose of these events is
to promote the General Assembly’s movement as well as to show concern for one’s
own country.

Changhua Presbytery Church and Society Committee Secretary, Rev. Hsiao
Tzu-ming, said local churches should feel more confident after residents’
combined efforts defeated plans to build a naphtha cracker plant in Changhua.
He urged Christians to persevere in their prayers, adding “Don’t just pray on
those 2 days that are assigned to you. Pray continually for Taiwan. Pray that
the kind of leader people want and the candidate that supports a nuclear-free
Taiwan will be elected to office.”
