“While we are currently working to provide immediate relief to displaced
persons and those with acute needs such as malnutrition, our focus moving
forward will address some of the root causes of the drought and famine.” —
Melissa Crutchfield, who leads UMCOR’s international disaster response.

Hunger continues to plague Horn of Africa

NEW YORK (UMNS) — The food shortage in the Horn of Africa is so severe that
much-needed assistance often arrives too late. The United Methodist
Committee on Relief and Church World Service are working to speed the way
   for aid to the famine-stricken.

Hungry teens find free food, no-hassles

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (UMNS) — Pregnant teenagers kicked out of the house.
“Couch-surfers” who crash at a friend's or relative’s house. Youth laying

Winter hits flood-plagued Minot

MINOT, N.D. (UMNS) — The first snow of the season — six inches and heavy —
fell Nov. 17 on central North Dakota where floods this summer left an
estimated 8,000 to 9,000 people homeless. “Only about 46 percent of flood
survivors needing housing are in Federal Emergency Management Association
trailers, said the Rev. Debra Ball-Kilbourne of Faith United Methodist
Church, “even though FEMA has worked mightily against our terrain. We still
have survivors in limited numbers of hotel rooms and, of course, some in
their cars/trucks.” Case managers are presenting 10 to 15 cases each week to
the unmet-needs committee. On the drawing board is an interfaith “volunteer
village” to house people assisting with [22]rebuilding efforts.

Tips for a sacred Thanksgiving

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — Can’t make it to church for Thanksgiving? Need
some guidance in saying grace? The United Methodist Board of Discipleship
has a number of resources and suggestions for celebrating [23]a meaningful
Thanksgiving at home and [24]showing gratitude for God’s blessings.

Advocacy to outlast ‘super committee’

WASHINGTON (UMNS) — While members of the Congressional Super Committee all
but acknowledged their failure to reach an agreement on the federal budget,
humanitarian agency Church World Service — a United Methodist partner —
joined with people of faith in cities across the United States on Sunday in
sending a clear message to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction
and Congress that cuts to programs for the most at-risk families and
children in the United States and abroad would cost lives and harm America.
