Ray Tiemann was re-elected May 20 to serve a third six-year term as bishop of the Southwestern Texas Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He was re-elected on the fifth ballot at the synod assembly May 19-20 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Tiemann received 199 votes and the Rev. Michael C. Coffey, pastor of First English Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, received 157 votes. Tiemann was first elected bishop in 2000 and re-elected in 2006. Born in Brenham, Texas, Tiemann graduated from Texas Lutheran College (now Texas Lutheran University) in 1975, earned a Master of Divinity degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1979, and a doctorate from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago in 1995. Texas Lutheran University is one 26 colleges and universities of the ELCA; Wartburg and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago are two of eight ELCA seminaries. Following his ordination in 1979, Tiemann served as pastor of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Cameron, Texas, and Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Texas.
