5CWSW1/22/95 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 ---- Peter Mikuliak of
Mayfield, Pa., this month begins a one-year term as
Church World Service Regional Director for Bosnia-
Herzegovina, based in Metkovic, Croatia.

A member of the Orthodox Church in America and
a long-time CWS staffer, Mr. Mikuliak will give
oversight to CWS response to human needs in Croatia
and Bosnia-Herzegovina in what he called "the joyous
process of transition from war relief to
reconstruction and reconciliation."

Since the start of the conflict four years ago,
U.S. churches have provided more than $10 million in
humanitarian aid through Church World Service to
civilians affected by the fighting in Bosnia-
Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia. To better identify
and meet needs, CWS opened its office in Metkovic in
late 1992.

From 1985-94, Mr. Mikuliak served Church World
Service as an Associate Regional Director for
Community Education and Fund-Raising in Cherry Hill,
N.J. That assignment included ecumenical community
organizing, program interpretation and fund-raising,
particularly through CROPWALKS, statewide.

In 1994-95, he was Director of Volunteer
Programs for the Baltimore, Md.-based International
Orthodox Christian Charities, including an emergency
four-month assignment as Acting Country
Representative in Moscow, Russia. He has led NCC
ecumenical youth work camps to Russia for four
years.

 Previous experience included social services
and community organizing, with a term as a Peace
Corps volunteer in Brazil. Mr. Mikuliak is the
third person to serve as Director of the CWS
operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
