FISCAL 1995 "MOST SATISFACTORY"

"The overall financial results for fiscal 1995 were most
satisfactory," Richard L. McAuliffe, treasurer of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America, reported March 1 to the ELCA
Conference of Bishops. The conference is made up of the church's
65 synod bishops and churchwide bishop and secretary. "The
churchwide organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America had an excess of income over expenses of $6.3 million in
current operating funds for the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 1996,"
said the report. Income of $77.2 million represented a 1.1
percent increase from the $76.3 million received in fiscal 1994.
Spending decreased 2.7 percent -- from $72.9 million in 1994 to
$71 million in 1995. The ELCA was operating with a spending
budget of $72.4 million in 1995, anticipating $73.9 million in
income. Contributions to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal totaled
$12 million -- $556,000 more than the previous year and $626,000
more than budget. ELCA Disaster Response funds received $1.4
million in fiscal 1995 -- about the same amount received the
previous year.
