United Methodist publications
among church press winners
by United Methodist News Service
The United Methodist mission magazine was a big winner of
awards given by the Associated Church Press April 12 during the
organization's annual convention in Phoenix.
Associated Church Press (ACP) encompasses approximately 200
religious publications. According to its statement of purpose, ACP
"stimulates higher standards of religious journalism in order to
exert a positive and constructive Christian influence on society."
In the association's annual competition, New World Outlook,
edited by Alma Graham and Christie R. House, received an award of
excellence for its statement of purpose. It also won a second
place in the "denominational general-interest magazine" category
and an award of merit for in-depth coverage of "Refugees in Our
World" in the January-February 1995 issue. New World Outlook is
published by the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.
Hoosier United Methodist News, edited by Lynne DeMichele,
received a third place best in class award for regional
newspapers. The publication of the Indiana Area also tied for an
award of merit in the theme, issue, section or series category for
newspapers.
The United Methodist Board of Church and Society's
publication, Christian Social Action, edited by Lee Ranck, was a
two time winner. It received an honorable mention for in-depth
coverage in a magazine for "50 Years After Hiroshima." It also
received an honorable mention for the "Special Issue on Children,"
April 1995.
The ecumenical magazine The Christian Century, edited by the
Rev. James M. Wall, a United Methodist, received an honorable
mention for "If Not There, Where?" in the Dec. 13, 1995, issue.
The Century also received an award of merit for an article "Where
Children Work: Child Servitude in the Global Economy" by United
Methodist, the Rev. Pharis Harvey.
Judges for the 40 categories of achievement in religious
journalism and publishing were professionals or known academics in
the specific field related to that category.
