First recipient of Bentzinger award
for Christian education announced
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Virginia Lee, diaconal minister
and member of the Virginia Annual Conference, is the first
recipient of the Rosalie Bentzinger Graduate Award.
The Rosalie Bentzinger Graduate Award is named for the former
associate general secretary of the Board of Higher Education and
Ministry's Division of Diaconal Ministry. She served as associate
general secretary for 15 years prior to her retirement in 1994.
The $5,000 scholarship recognizes a United Methodist student
pursuing a doctorate in Christian education in a graduate
theological institution.
Lee is enrolled in Presbyterian School of Christian
Education, Richmond, Va. She has served as diaconal minister for
age-level ministries and missions at Reveille United Methodist
Church in Richmond.
"The Division of Diaconal Ministry is excited the first
Rosalie Bentzinger Graduate Award will be given to Virginia Lee,"
said the Rev. Jimmy Carr, associate general secretary for the
division. "Her academic history in The College of William and Mary
and Duke Divinity school and her ministry as a diaconal minister
in local churches as well as her experience in her doctoral
program indicate her ability and her commitment to strengthening
Christian education as she prepares to be a future professor,"
said Carr. Lee "is just the kind of person the division was
looking for to become the first recipient of the Bentzinger
award," he said.
