Grants help three campus
ministers with graduate studies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Three campus ministers who are
working toward doctorates at United Methodist-related
institutions of higher education are the 1996-97 recipients of
the Baker Graduate Awards.
Named in honor of the late Bishop James C. Baker, the annual
award is issued by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education
and Ministry's Office of Loans and Scholarships. It is given to
campus ministers who are continuing their education either
through a full-time degree program, working toward certification
in a non-degree program or in an independent study program.
     The 1996-97 recipients are:
Kristen J. Leslie, a full-time graduate student at the
School of Theology at Claremont, Claremont, Calif. She was campus
minister at Adrian (Mich.) College before beginning her doctoral
studies and has served as a graduate assistant in pastoral
counseling at The Clinebell Institute, Claremont.
Stanley A. McKinnon, campus minister at Texas Tech
University, Lubbock. He plans to begin full-time work on his Ph.D
this fall at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, before
returning to work in campus ministry.
Mary J. Sims-Barden, chaplain at West Virginia Wesleyan
College, Buckhannon, W.Va. She plans to begin work on a doctor of
ministry degree at Wesley Theological Seminary this fall. She is
a member of the Baltimore-Washington Annual Conference and is an
affiliate member of the Virginia Annual Conference.
