Trotter named president
of new UMCom foundation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- The Rev. F. Thomas Trotter, former
president of Alaska Pacific University and staff executive of
United Methodism's Board of Higher Education and Ministry, has
been named president of the Foundation for United Methodist
Communications (UMCom).
Trotter will begin his work with the churchwide
communications agency part-time May 1. He retired in 1995 after a
career in United Methodist higher education.
"We face a future when technology gives us unprecedented
opportunities for getting the Good News out to the whole world,"
said the Rev. Judy Weidman, staff executive for UMCom. "Such
opportunities challenge conventional sources of income. With Tom
Trotter, we have a leader who can both provide the theological
vision and credibility with potential donors."
The new foundation will be organized formally at an Oct. 19
meeting. Trotter is recruiting eight members for the foundation
board. Nine additional members of the 17-member board will come
from the UMCom governing body.
Trotter was president of Alaska Pacific University from 1987
to 1995. He was General Secretary of the Nashville-based Board of
Higher Education and Ministry from 1973 to 1987. Previously he
was dean of the School of Theology at Claremont, Calif., founding
pastor of a local church, and Protestant chaplain at Boston
University.
During his eight years as president of Alaska Pacific
University, he raised the level of annual gifts to more than $2
million and established a foundation for the development of long
term endowment. He resides in Indian Wells, Calif.
