DANVILLE, Ky.--Centre College has received a $500,000 challenge grant from
the Kresge Foundation, based in Troy, Mich., to be applied toward the
construction of a new administrative building and the renovation of two
existing structures. The college must meet the terms of the challenge grant
by raising $1.1 million from donors and other friends within the next year.
With the combined revenues of the grant, the challenge monies to be raised
and the $1.4 million already committed to the project by friends of the
college, Centre will have the $3 million needed to cover the total cost of
the construction and renovation project. Construction and renovations are
expected to begin in June.

DAVIDSON, N.C.--Trustees of The Duke Endowment have recently approved
$850,881 in grants to benefit Davidson College. These grants will assist in
funding a new campuswide computer networking project, a new Life Sciences
building, increased financial aid and other ongoing projects. Founded in
1924 by North Carolina industrialist James Buchanan Duke, The Duke
Endowment is one of the nation's largest private foundations with assets
totaling more than $1.5 billion. The endowment makes grants to hospitals
and children's homes in North and South Carolina, to rural Methodist
churches and retired ministers in North Carolina, and to Davidson College,
Duke, Furman and Johnson C. Smith Universities.

WAUKESHA, Wis.--Carroll College has received more than $600,000 from the
estate of Edgar Thronson, a former student and trustee. These gifts have
been designated for the Edgar and Edna Thronson endowed chair in chemistry.
The gift establishes a permanent invested fund with annual earnings used to
support a faculty position, research and other professional services.
Thronson, of West Chester, Pa., died July 12, 1995, at age 89. He was a
member of the Carroll College board of trustees from 1970 to 1993. His wife
died in 1989.
