DAVIDSON, N.C.--Gail and Gilmour Lake and friends of Julian and the late
Robert Lake have created a scholarship endowment worth more than $680,000
to fund the Julian and Robert Lake Scholarship at Davidson College. The
scholarship was announced recently at a gathering of Lake family members
and friends on the Davidson campus. It honors Gilmour Lake's father,
Julian, and the memory of his brother, Robert, and will be awarded to
children of ministers in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The award will
cover half of Davidson's tuition costs. The first Lake Scholar will enroll
next fall with the class of 2000, and an additional scholar will be chosen
each year in perpetuity.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-- With a recent donation of more than $28,000 in stock in
memory of his parents, Dr. Thomas Madison Jr. has become the largest single
contributor among Stillman College alumni. His donation, in memory of
Tommie and Carrie Madison, will be used to endow a scholarship fund for
students of teacher education. Stillman president Cordell Wynn said when he
first came to Stillman in 1982, there were only seven students enrolled in
teacher education classes. That number has increased to 187 this year.
Teacher education is one of the college's fastest growing areas and an area
of need. "We certainly appreciate the generous donation of Dr. Madison and
his wife," Wynn said. "They have been faithful supporters of the college
and their gift will benefit many students."
WAUKESHA, Wis.--Claire Beglinger has been appointed director of
publications at Carroll College, according to Dean Rein, vice president for
college advancement. Beglinger was a writer and staff reporter at "The
Freeman" in Waukesha from 1984-87 and was the newspaper's news editor from
1987 to December 1995. Beglinger is a native of Massachusetts and a
graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee. "Her expertise will
strengthen our ability to communicate effectively with our various
publics," Rein said.
