Cliff Kirkpatrick Nominated As Next Stated Clerk
by Jerry Van Marter and Barry Creech
LOUISVILLE, Ky--The search committee for a new stated clerk announced May
3, that its nominee is the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick is
currently the director of the Worldwide Ministries Division in Louisville.
Search committee chair, Brian D. Ellison, issued the following statement on
behalf of the committee:
"With excitement and unanimity, the Stated Clerk Review/Nomination
Committee announces that it will place the name of Clifton Kirkpatrick in
nomination for the office of Stated Clerk of the General Assembly at the
208th General Assembly (1996) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
"Dr. Kirkpatrick was ordained in 1968 by the Presbytery of Northeast
Texas. He is currently serving as director of the Worldwide Ministries
Division of the General Assembly Council, a position in which he directs
the PCUSA's work in ecumenical partnerships, global service and witness,
and people in mutual mission.
"The committee was particularly impressed with Kirkpatrick's
theologically grounded vision for the church and his approach to leadership
rooted firmly in Scripture and the Reformed tradition. He is a gifted and
experienced administrator, currently coordinating 80 staff colleagues, 450
mission personnel, and 500 international volunteers; working with leaders
of 84 partner churches, an elected division committee, leaders of 30
related groups and advisory committees, and colleagues in other General
Assembly entities; and overseeing a $40 million budget. He is also a
person of deep faith and integrity, respected by Christian leaders both
within the United States and around the world.
"The committee began its work after its election at last year's
General Assembly. Since that time, it has solicited input and names of
possible nominess from all across the church. Applications were
impressive, both in number and in overall quality. Still, Kirkpatrick was
the committee's clear and unanimous selection. We look forward with joy to
presenting this most qualified individual to the Assembly on June 29."
