Seminar Geared for Western U.S. Presbyterians
to be Held at Presbyterian United Nations Office
By Julian Shipp
NEW YORK, N.Y.--As part of its "Discover the Vision" seminar program, the
Presbyterian United Nations Office will sponsor a May 15-17 seminar for
Presbyterians from the synods of the Pacific, Alaska-Northwest, the Rocky
Mountains, Southern California and Hawaii, and the Southwest. Seminar
topics will draw from recent U.N. events.
In the past few years, the United Nations has experienced much change
and has taken its work to new dimensions. World conferences such as the
Social Summit in Copenhagen (March 1995) and the Women's Conference in
Beijing (September 1995) have brought new dynamics to the work of the U.N.,
and non-governmental organizations such as the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
have played an active role in shaping programs and agendas of these U.N.
conferences.
Concurrent with these developments have been such U.N. peacekeeping
missions as those in Haiti and Bosnia, as well as the United Nations'
continuing budget crisis.
The Presbyterian U.N. office seminar, designed specifically for
Presbyterians from the western U.S., will examine some of these issues and
the challenges they pose.
Participants will hear briefings from U.N. officials, church staff
people and others. Speakers will focus on various topics, including the
advancement of women, peacekeeping, the state of the world's refugees and
the land mine situation. The history and future of the relationship
between the Presbyterian Church and the United Nations will also be
examined.
The registration fee is $120 and includes most meals, briefings,
resources, and a tour of the United Nations. For those requiring lodging,
the accommodation fee is an additional $110. Accommodation is in a
two-person, nonsmoking suite at a midtown Manhattan hotel within walking
distance of the United Nations. The registration deadline is April 22.
For additional information and a registration form, contact the
Presbyterian United Nations Office at (212) 697-4568.
The Presbyterian U.N. Office is part of the Presbyterian Peacemaking
Program and is funded by the annual Peacemaking Offering.
