        Memorial Service Set for Margaret Brown on Dec. 28

     A memorial service for Margaret Brown, the mother of Presbyterian 
Church (U.S.A.) executive director the Rev. James D. Brown, will be held 
next Thursday morning in Canadian, Texas. 
 
     Brown died Tuesday night at the Senior Village Nursing Home in 
Perryton, Texas, where she had been a resident for several months. Her body 
has been sent to New York State, where she will be interred next to her 
husband, James E. Brown. 
 
     The service will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 28 at the First 
Presbyterian Church. 
 
     Brown was born April 18, 1918, and spent most of her childhood in 
Morgantown, W.Va.  Her father was the only orthopedic surgeon in a 
three-state area. 
 
     She attended West Virginia University, graduating as a teacher in 
1938.  Her husband was a public school principal in several small towns in 
West Virginia; and in the 1940s, the couple moved to central New York, 
where he was the principal of Whitesboro Central High School.  He died of a 
stroke in 1955 at the age of 40. 
 
     She went back to teaching, focusing her work on children with learning 
disabilities.  In 1973 she too suffered a stroke, from which she never 
fully recovered.  After several years in a Florida retirement community, 
she moved to Canadian to be near her son, Rob, and his family. 
 
     In addition to her two sons, James and Rob, Brown is survived by a 
daughter, Anne Reid, of West Bend, Wis. five grandchildren and two 
great-grandchildren.
