95355 Rededication to Mark Conversion of Boggs Academy
to Boggs Rural Life Center
by Jerry L. Van Marter
KEYSVILLE, Ga.--The culmination of a "special success story" for the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be marked Oct. 22 when Phelps
Administration Building at Boggs Rural Life Center (BRLC) in Burke County,
Ga., is rededicated.
The center was created in 1991 when the PC(USA) deeded the property of
the former Boggs Academy to a consortium of local and national groups.
Since then, buildings have been restored and rural community development
programs initiated on the site of the former boarding school for black
youth.
Gilbert Banks, chair of the BRLC board of directors, said the
rededication "will provide an opportunity to celebrate a major
accomplishment and reaffirm the mission of Boggs as a place for learning
and demonstrating creative approaches to human and community development."
According to Jinny Miller, chair of the rededication committee and a
member of the General Assembly Council of the PC(USA), "the Boggs 'rebirth'
has been a special success story in the PC(USA). With our formal covenant
relationship and ongoing GAC involvement, the partnership of the PC(USA)
with Boggs' local and national leadership has produced very exciting
results."
Presbyterian Women (PW) provided key funding for the Phelps Building
renovation with a grant of $375,000 from its 1992 Birthday Offering.
Miller was vice moderator of PW at the time.
Reservations for the event and additional information about Boggs
Rural Life Center may be obtained by calling Deena Jones at the center at
(706) 554-0110.
