95375 NEW BUILDING AT ZEPHYR POINT NEARS COMPLETION
by Eva Stimson
(with information from Charles E. Link)
ZEPHYR POINT, Nev.--December 26 is the date set for the grand opening of a
new multipurpose facility that will dramatically expand the accommodations
offered at Zephyr Point, a Presbyterian conference center here on the south
shore of Lake Tahoe.
The Tahoe Center, a modern lakefront facility offering 43 guest rooms
with private baths, will supplement the 70-year-old conference center's
current, more spartan guest accommodations -- two rustic lodges and a
cluster of cabins. The $5.5 million facility also features a wheelchair
lift, spacious dining hall and kitchen, and state-of-the-art meeting
rooms.
Construction of the new facility is being funded by private donations
and a commercial loan, according to Zephyr Point director Dorman Leader.
The Rev. Jean Anne Swope and the Rev. James L. Mechem, a retired
Presbyterian clergy couple from Lake Clear, N.Y., are working at the
conference center as mission volunteers and donating their carpentry skills
to the construction project.
The scenic property occupied by Zephyr Point was purchased for $6,000
by the former Synod of California in 1925. Now it is owned by the Synod of
the Pacific and the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii. The
conference center is managed by a commission of Sacramento Presbytery,
which launched the drive to build the new Tahoe Center facility.
Commission members are convinced that the alpine lake setting and
modern facilities will make Zephyr Point a popular destination for
Presbyterians across the country. "If they come here once, they will come
again," says commission chair Frankie Laney. "That is our observation."
