RICHMOND--Estelle Roundtree McCarthy, associate professor of Christian
education at the Presbyterian School of Christian education, has announced
she will retire at the end of the 1995-96 academic year. She has taught
courses on the work of the church educator, teaching as an art and
curriculum since 1985.
PITTSBURGH--Ronald Cole-Turner will join the faculty of Pittsburgh
Theological Seminary as the H. Parker Sharpe associate professor of
theology and ethics in the fall, 1996. Cole-Turner is an ordained minister
in the United Church of Christ and has served local congregations in New
York and as a campus minister in Michigan.
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--President John Mulder has announced that the Louisville
Presbyterian Theological Seminary has received a $1.9 million grant from
the Lilly Endowment, Inc., for continued support of the Louisville
Institute, an endowment program for the study of American religion at the
seminary. Founded in 1990, this grant makes it possible for the Institute
to broaden its attention beyond American Protestantism to American
Catholicism, historic African-American churches and the Hispanic religious
experience.
AUSTIN, Texas--Fourteen students of Austin Presbyterian Theological
Seminary received academic scholarships at the 1995 commencement. The
Charles L. King Preaching Award went to Philip Lotspeich; and Lemuel
Garcia-Arroyo received the Rachel Henderlite Award for the graduate
contributing to increased understanding among diverse groups on campus.
Graduate Kathleen Hignight was the recipient of the John B. Spragens Award,
to be used for further Christian education training. Four students received
the Sam B. Hicks scholarships, awarded for academic achievement, Christian
character and promise for ministry: Sonja Dalglish, Melinda Veatch, Pam
Laing and Burnell "Johnnie" McQueen. The 1995 recipients of the Martin G.
Miller awards for potential in ministry went to: Joan Gaines, William
Seitz, Marisela Garcia, Amanda Smith, John Sowers, Deiter Heinzl and Marcie
Dameron.
