95091 INTERFAITH GROUP HOSTS WORLD MISSION CONFERENCE
by Jerry L. Van Marter
CHICAGO--The Chicago Center for Global Ministries, an organization of the
Association of Chicago Theological Schools that seeks the "globalization"
of theological education, is sponsoring the 20th annual World Mission
Institute April 27-29 at the Lutheran School of Theology here.
Presbyterians participate through McCormick Theological Seminary.
Planning committee members include McCormick faculty members Edward
Campbell and Hearn Chun.
Each year the institute focuses on various aspects of world mission
and interreligious matters. This year's theme is "Mission as
Reconciliation."
Organizers explained the theme: "In the space between the chaos and
hope of our modern world, in the face of daily violence and its
life-shattering consequences, and in recognition of the growing need for
the healing and reconciliation of both individuals and whole societies, a
new theology of mission is emerging -- mission as reconciliation."
Keynote speaker is Father Michael Lapsley, an Anglican priest from New
Zealand who served as a chaplain to the African National Congress in South
Africa and who founded the Trauma Center for Victims of Violence and
Torture in Cape Town.
Other speakers include Robert J. Schreiter, a professor of doctrinal
theology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and Margaret Mitchell,
associate professor of New Testament at McCormick Theological Seminary.
Some workshop topics include reconciliation and world peace,
reconciliation and violence against women, reconciliation and race,
reconciliation and interreligious dialogue, and reconciliation and
forgiveness.
The institute's 17 sponsoring organizations include Roman Catholic,
Protestant and Islamic groups.
