96183     PHEWA Announces 1996 Ministry Award Recipients

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Doorstep Ministry in Topeka, Kan., and Seventh Avenue 
Presbyterian Church in San Francisco have been named recipients of the 
Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Association (PHEWA) 1996 
Ministry Awards. 
 
     The awards will be presented at the General Assembly Council's Awards 
Service, July 3, in Albuquerque. 
 
     Doorstep Ministry, in its 30th year of ministry in Topeka, will 
receive the Network Community Ministry Award from Community Ministries and 
Neighborhood Organizations (COMANO).  The interfaith and ecumenical 
ministry is sponsored by 48 congregations, five of them Presbyterian. 
Doorstep's services include a food bank, a clothing bank, a wellness 
clinic, medical and utility assistance, emergency transportation, 
counseling, commodity distribution and a secondhand store. 
 
     Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church will receive the 1996 Urban 
Ministry Award, sponsored by the Urban Presbyterian Pastors' Association 
(UPPA).  With just 100 members and part-time pastoral leadership, the 
church nevertheless hosts 4,000 people a month who meet in various 12-step 
groups, attend a very active senior center ministry, build low-income 
housing in the neighborhood, deliver meals to persons with HIV/AIDS, 
operate a day-care center and participate in a variety of other community 
ministries. 
 
     COMANO and UPPA are two of the 10 ministry networks that comprise 
PHEWA.  The others are the Presbyterian AIDS Network, the Presbyterian 
Association of Specialized Pastoral Ministries, the Presbyterian Child 
Advocacy Network, the Presbyterian Health Network, the Presbyterian Network 
on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, the Presbyterian Serious Mental Illness 
Network, Presbyterians Affirming Reproductive Options and Presbyterians for 
Disability Concerns.
