Two weightlifters with United Methodist
connections finish 6th, 14th in Olympics

                 by United Methodist News Service

Two members of the Wesley Weightlifters, a program of church-
related Inter/Serv of St. Joseph, Mo., took part in the Centennial
Olympics in Atlanta.
Wes Barnett placed sixth out of 22 lifters in the 108 kg (238
pound) class. Pete Kelley finished 14th among 28 lifters in the
99 kilogram (218 pound) class.
Barnett placed 15th in his weight class in the Barcelona
games. In Atlanta he snatched 385.75 pounds and lifted in the
clean-and-jerk 485 pounds, a total of 870.5 pounds, breaking his
own previous record by 27.5 pounds.
Kelley did not know he was part of the U.S. Olympic
weightlifting team until July 18, the day before the games opened.
He set a U.S. record in his class lifting 352.75 pounds in the
snatch and 435.5 pounds in the clean-and-jerk for a total of 788
pounds.
Dennis Snethen, assistant coach of the U.S. Olympic
Weightlifting teams, is youth director and weightlifting coach of
Inter/Serv's Wesley Center.
Olympic weightlifting is part of the youth program of
Inter/Serv, a church-based ecumenical social services program in
St. Joseph. Started in 1909 by a group of women from the
Methodist Episcopal Church South as Wesley House, it was
originally a mission to foreign-born workers in the local stock
yards and packing plant.
As community needs in St. Joseph changed, so did Inter/Serv.
It now provides services for children, youth and older adults.
