Staff changes in restructure
of mission agency revealed

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- The United Methodist Church's mission
agency has announced the names of top executives working under the
new structure unveiled at the end of July.
The Rev. Randolph Nugent continues as general secretary.
Lorene F. Wilbur, who was an associate general secretary,
becomes deputy general secretary for administration.
Continuing as general treasurer is Stephen F. Brimigion.
The deputy general secretary for planning and research is the
Rev. Michael G. Rivas, who was the board planning director.
The Rev. Robert J. Harman is deputy general secretary for two
newly defined areas: community and institutional ministries, which
is to serve as liaison with institutions, agencies and church
structures, including community ministries and congregational
outreach; and evangelization and church growth, which includes
development of new congregations and capital campaigns.
Deborah Bass is associate general secretary for those two
areas.
Yet to be named is the deputy general secretary to lead the
mission contexts and relationships area -- dealing with mission
issues in various countries, relationships to central conferences
and autonomous churches, ecumenical agencies and global networks -
- and mission education -- promoting the board's philosophy and
providing educational resources for missionaries, clergy and
laity. Rena Yokum is associate general secretary for both areas.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and Health
and Welfare Ministries Program Department have been joined
administratively into a unit to be called health and relief, but
both departments will retain their legal identities. This unit and
mission volunteers will be headed by the Rev. Kenneth Lutgen Jr.,
formerly associate general secretary for the UMCOR program
department. An associate general secretary will be named later.
The deputy general secretary for mission personnel has not
been designated yet, but the Rev. John L. McCullough is associate
general secretary. This unit is to care for missionaries from
recruitment through retirement.
Under the continuing direction of Joyce D. Sohl, deputy
general secretary, the Women's Division will continue to work with
other units of the board in ministering to women, children and
youth.
The Rev. S T Kimbrough Jr. continues to head mission
evangelism for the board, but his title has changed from executive
secretary to associate general secretary.
Four other executives, three of whom were assistant general
secretaries before the new plan went into effect, are assigned to
the office of the general secretary without titles or designation
beyond "special assignments," according to the new staff roster.
They are Charles Cole, who headed the section of mission
resources eight months ago; Wilma J. Roberts, who was assistant
general secretary for administration and program in the world
division; Doreen Tilghman who headed the Africa/Middle East team
of the world division: and Lulu Garrett, whose job was personnel
support coordination in the functional ministries team of the
world division.
