HASTINGS, Neb.--Hastings College began classes Sept. 3 with a record 
first-day enrollment of 1,604 students registered. This figure represents a 
 .7 percent increase over last year's initial count of 1,057.  According to 
Jim Smith, college registrar, this unofficial first-day count includes 
returning students, first-year students, transfers and master of arts in 
teaching students. Official enrollment figures will not be tabulated until 
Oct. 1. Full-time enrollment on the opening day of classes was 1,006 
undergraduates, a 1.9 percent increase over last year's figure of 987. 
 
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Dr. Oscar E. Remick has informed the Westminster 
College board of trustees that he will retire as chancellor/CEO of the 
college by July 1, 1997. According to board chair Scott A. Beck, Remick 
will he honored at that time with the title of president emeritus. Remick 
is the immediate past chair of the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and 
Universities, chair of the Commission for Independent Colleges and 
Universities, of Pennsylvania, immediate past chair of the Association of 
Presbyterian Colleges and Universities and chair of the Pennsylvania 
Council of the Arts. 
 
WAYNESBURG, Pa.--Waynesburg College has announced the promotion of Director 
of Admissions Robin Moore to dean of admissions, effective immediately. 
Moore has served at Waynesburg College since 1987. She is responsible for 
providing perspective students with advertising and publications about the 
college, which enrolls approximately 1,200 students annually. "Mrs. Moore's 
leadership as a member of the senior administrative staff has resulted in 
positive gains for Waynesburg College," said college president Timothy R. 
Thyreen. "Effective student recruitment and enrollment programs are 
essential in providing access to quality independent higher education." 
 
WOOSTER, Ohio-- Equal rights advocate Lani Guinier, whose nomination as 
assistant attorney general for civil rights in the U.S. Department of 
Justice was withdrawn by President Bill Clinton following public criticism 
of her views on voting rights and democracy, will be one of the main 
speakers during the 1996 Wooster Forum Series at The College of Wooster 
this fall. Guinier will present a lecture titled "Re-framing the 
Affirmative Action Debate" on Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the college's McGraw 
Chapel.  All the series presentations are free and open to the public.
