Mission board evacuating
refugee workers from Zaire

     NEW YORK (UMNS) --  The United Methodist Board of Global
Ministries is evacuating missionaries and volunteers from refugee
camps in Zaire in the wake of reported fighting in the area.
     According to a Sept. 25 statement issued by the Rev.
Randolph Nugent, the board's general secretary, the U.S. State
Department has offered assistance with the evacuation. The
mission board currently has eight Zairean United Methodist
staffers, three missionaries, four volunteers and one United
Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) staff member working with
refugees in Uvira, Bukavu and Goma.
     State department officials have reported fighting between
Zairean forces and forces in neighboring Rwanda in the border
town of Bukavu. Gunfire or shellfire into Uvira from Rwanda also
had been reported earlier.
     Board officials are taking precautions to minimize potential
harm to local church members and other personnel in the area as
well. They have been advised that all communications, including
e-mail, into or out of the area are being monitored "and that
inaccurate or inflammatory statements could increase the danger
to our people."
