Kathy Thomas-Sano elected executive director
of United Methodist Asian American Federation

     Kathy Thomas-Sano, Pasadena, Calif., has been elected
executive director of the National Federation of Asian American
United Methodists, effective Oct. 1.
     She succeeds the Rev. Peter Sun. Offices are located in San
Francisco. Announcement of the election was made by the Rev. Man
Singh Das, Aurora, Ill., chairperson of the caucus which represents
about 50,000 Asian American United Methodists.  Nearly 300 of the
denomination's 37,000 local churches have a predominant Asian
American membership.
     The caucus has an annual meeting and publishes a monthly
newsletter, Asian American News.
     Thomas-Sano, wife of Los Angeles Bishop Roy I.Sano, was born
in Hawaii of a Korean mother and a Caucasian father.
     For the past 11 years she has served as a consultant to the
church's Western Jurisdictional Inter-Ethnic Coordinating
Committee.  She has served as assocate director of the California
Nevada Conference Council on Ministries; acting director and
associate director of the Pacific and Asian American Center for
Theology and Strategies in Berkley, Calif.; coordinator of
Investors Services of the United Methodist Development Fund; and in
several positions with the church's New York-based Board of Global
Ministries.
     She has served as a governing board member of the National
Council of Churches and of two United Methodist churchwide
agencies: the Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious
Concerns and General Council on Ministries.
