Top Religion Newswriting Awards

WASHINGTON--Laurie Goodstein, national religion reporter for "The
Washington Post," won the top two religion-writing awards for the second
straight year in an annual contest sponsored by the Religion Newswriters
Association.
Goodstein won the Templeton Reporter of the Year competition and the
James O. Supple Memorial Award for distinguished newswriting on religion in
1995.
The second-place winner of the Templeton is Richard Sheinin of the
"San Jose Mercury News" in San Jose, Calif. Religion News Service national
correspondent Ira Rifkin won third place. Mark O'Keefe of "The Oregonian"
in Portland, Ore., won an honorable mention in the Templeton.
In the Supple competition, Gustav Niebuhr of "The New York Times" won
second place, and Sandi Dolbee of "The San Diego Union-Tribune" won third
place. Religion News Service's New Delhi correspondent Paul Murphy
received an honorable mention in the Supple.
For the first time, the Religion Newswriters Association honored
writers at medium-sized newspapers with the George Cornell Memorial Award.
Susan Hogan/Albach, formerly of the "The State" in Columbia, S.C., and the
"Duluth News-Tribune" in Duluth, Minn., won first place. She is now with
the "Minneapolis Star Tribune." Eric Frazier of "The Post and Courier" in
Charleston, S.C., earned second place and Dennis Roberts of "The Modesto
Bee" came in third.
The Louis Cassels Memorial Award for excellence in religion
newswriting for smaller newspapers was won by David Frisk of the "Ledger
Dispatch" in Antioch, Calif. Second place was awarded to Julia Duin,
formerly of "The Daily Times" in Farmington, N.M., and now with "The
Washington Times." Marcia Nelson of "The Beacon News" in Aurora, Ill.,
came in third.
"The Dallas Morning News" won the Harold Schachern Award for the best
religion section. "The Grand Rapids Press" of Grand Rapids, Mich., captured
second and "The Daily Independent" of Ashland, Ky., came in third. "The
Home News and Tribune" of East Brunswick, N.J., received an honorable
mention.
The awards were announced Aug. 31 at the organization's annual meeting
in Evanston, Ill.
The Religion Newswriters Association, with some 200 members, includes
religion writers who work for secular media in the United States and
Canada.
