WOMEN OF THE ELCA APPOINTS BOWES

Terry L. Bowes of Longmont, Colo., was appointed as interim
executive director for the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America effective Oct. 1. Women of the ELCA's
executive board made its decision Sept. 13. She will serve until
an executive director is elected in nine months. Agaliece
Miller, assistant director of the ELCA Department for Human
Resources, has served as temporary directory, since the
resignation of Dr. Charlotte E. Fiechter in July. In an
interview Bowes said, "Transition time is absolutely critical in
the life of an organization. It is not a time of dormancy, but a
time of growth and creativity. I am convinced that the women#s
organization is called to be a powerful and dynamic presence in
this world." Bowes is a member of the ELCA Church Council and is
employed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fort Collins, Colo., where
she provides leadership and training in areas of congregational
life. She will resign both positions to assume her new
responsibilities. "There are ministries Women of the ELCA carry
out that are unique, and the organization speaks with a unique
voice," said Bowes. She was the first president of the ELCA
Rocky Mountain Synod's synodical women's organization. Nearly
three million participants in 9,000 congregations make up Women
of the ELCA.with about 30 congregations in special efforts to
raise $5 million.
