Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., has received a $7.5 million
grant to build a new 45,000 square foot facility that will house
the college's educational technology center. Thomas Tredway,
president of Augustana College, said, "We envision a day when
virtually all Augustana students will regularly make use of the
advanced learning and research tools which this building will
offer. Having the dedication of our faculty and students
acknowledged by this grant is a tremendous honor for Augustana."
The facility, scheduled for completion in 1998, will include
classrooms and computer facilities, computer and video
laboratories, and computer data projection equipment. Seven
"smart" classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium and four specially-
equipped seminar rooms will offer students and faculty multi-
media computer stations and Internet connections. The grant was
provided by the F.W. Olin Foundation. Lawrence Milas, president
of the foundation, said, "There has been a longstanding
commitment at Augustana to integrate technology into its highly
regarded academic programs." The F.W. Olin Center will be located
between the Augustana Library and the college's new science
building, linking Augustana's strong traditions in the humanities
and science.
