ELCA COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES MAKE THE GRADE

"U.S. News & World Report" gave high marks to the colleges and
universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Several ELCA schools appeared in the magazine's Sept. 16 issue
ranking America's best colleges.  Nine were ranked by their
academic reputation as among the best national liberal arts
colleges:

     38   St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn.
     48   Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pa.
     63   Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn.
     91   Luther College, Decorah, Iowa
     91   Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio
     101  Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill.
     101  Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa.
     126  Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn.
     126  Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa

Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pa., was ranked as the best
regional liberal arts college in the North, with an overall score
of 100 and the top academic reputation.  Texas Lutheran College
(now Texas Lutheran University), Seguin, Texas, was the fourth
best regional liberal arts college in the West; and Roanoke
College, Salem, Va., was the fifth best regional liberal arts
college in the South.  Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma,
Wash., was ranked ninth among the best regional universities in
the West.  Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind., an
independent Lutheran university, ranked second among the best
regional universities in the Midwest.
