WASHINGTON--In 1994 Americans spent considerably more on lotteries than 
they gave to their churches, according to Associated Baptist Press (ABP). 
 
     ABP compared figures from a U.S. Census Bureau report, according to 
which $26.6 billion was spent by Americans on state lotteries, with figures 
from the "Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches," which show that in 
the same period total contributions to churches by American congregations 
were $19.6 billion.
