UMCOR preparing second shipment
in response to North Korea famine

     NEW YORK (UMNS) -- In a continuing response to famine in
North Korea, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is
preparing a 100,000-box shipment for families in need.
     Each box contains cooking rice, powdered milk, canned meat,
shortening, chocolate bars -- enough to feed a family of five for
a week -- along with a small rake and trowel and a comb-and-brush
set.
     The airlift, expected to occur by the end of the year, also
will include an additional 3,000 tons of rice.
     Last spring, UMCOR received a license from the U.S.
Department of Commerce to ship $100,000 worth of humanitarian
supplies. The license for this second shipment was granted in
September.
     At a cost of $75 apiece, the relief packages are being
assembled by church-related volunteers at the UMCOR depot in
Baldwin, La.
