Julius Scott appointed
president of Wiley College
The appointment of the Rev. Julius S. Scott Jr. to the
presidency of United Methodist-related Wiley College places one of
the school's most renowned graduates at its helm.
Scott became president and chief executive officer of Wiley
College, Marshall, Texas, on Oct. 21. The appointment marks the
first time that the son of a former president of the historically
black United Methodist-related institution will serve as its head.
His father, Julius S. Scott Sr. was president of Wiley College
from 1948-1958 and began his career at college as assistant to the
president in 1930.
"On behalf of Wiley College and the city of Marshall, I am
delighted to welcome Dr. Scott back to his Alma Mater," said
Warren A. Scott, (no relation) chairman of the college board of
trustees. "We are privileged to have the leadership of such a
capable and unique individual."
A native of Texas, Scott earned degrees from Wiley, Garrett-
Evangelical Seminary, Brown University and a doctorate from Boston
University. His professional career includes teaching at Wiley,
Boston University, Atlanta University and Spelman. He also served
from 1982-88 as a staff executive in the United Methodist Board of
Higher Education and Ministry.
The presidency of Wiley will not be Scott's first time as
chief executive officer of a college. He was the president on two
separate occasions at historically black, United Methodist-related
Paine College, Augusta, Ga. Last March he was appointed interim
president of Albany (Ga.) State College.
For the last four years, Scott served as vice-president of
the church's University Senate. He is an expert in the relation of
social ethics and higher education
