United Methodist-related Lindsey Wilson
College breaks ground for $2 million chapel

COLUMBIA, Ky. (UMNS) -- United Methodist-related Lindsey
Wilson College broke ground here Nov. 16 for a $2 million chapel
designed by internationally renowned architect E. Fay Jones, a
disciple of pioneering American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Money for the chapel was given by anonymous donors.
Lindsey Wilson, located in South Central Kentucky, is one of
the fastest growing colleges in the Southeast. Since 1977, when
John B. Begley was named president, enrollment has increased more
than 320 percent to its current level of 1,362 students.
The Kentucky chapel will be the eighth designed by Jones.
Jones' Thorncrown Chapel, located in the Ozark Mountains of
Arkansas, was voted best work of American architecture since 1980,
according to a national survey of architects. It attracts about
250,000 visitors annually.
"We are very excited that Fay Jones will design our chapel,"
Begley said. "He is the premier architect of chapels, and it is
fitting that he design a chapel for the premier college in the
Southeast."
The chapel will be the third major building Lindsey Wilson
has added to its campus in the past three years and the ninth new
building in the past 13 years.
Lindsey Wilson was founded in 1903 as a training school by
Catherine Wilson of Louisville, Ky., and was named after her
deceased nephew. It became a junior college in 1923, a four-year
college in 1986, and offered a master's program in counseling and
human development in 1993.
