96449 Deadline Nears for Ecumenical Service
Recognition Awards
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The December 1 deadline for submitting nominiations for
the Presbyterian Church's annual Ecumenical Service Recognition awards is
fast approaching.
Three awards are given each year -- one each to a congregation,
presbytery and synod -- to acknowledge significant contributions to the
cause of Christian unity. They are presented during the meeting of the
General Assembly by the moderator.
According to the Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations Office of the
Worldwide Ministries Division, there are three purposes for the awards:
* "to bear testimony to the PC(USA)'s belief that the church of
Jesus is one...and that the Lord of the Church wills that it be
visibly one in the world..."
* "to affirm the PC(USA)'s commitment to the governing bodies of
the church as the most appropriate means whereby this
denomination may demonstrate its obedience to the divine will
that the church be visibly one..."
* "to give help and encouragement to those within the church who
are looking for practical examples of ways the church...can move
beyond affirmation to action in manifesting this unity. ..."
The awards were established by the 1979 General Assembly and are
administered by the Advisory Committee on Ecumenical and Interfaith
Relations.
For more information, call the Rev. Kathy Reeves in the Ecumenical and
Interfaith Relations Office in Louisville at (502) 569-5303.
