Seminary establishes scholarship in honor
of higher education executive
by Kathy Gilbert*
NASHVILLE, (UMNS) -- Garrett-Evangelical Theological
Seminary, Evanston, Ill., has established the Roger W. Ireson
Scholarship in honor of the top staff executive of the churchwide
Board of Higher Education and Ministry, here.
"Garrett-Evangelical salutes a committed minister of Jesus
Christ who demonstrates what is required to love God with one's
mind," said the Rev. Neal Fisher, president of the seminary.
Fisher cited Ireson's role as pastor in Michigan, adjunct
professor in the field of philosophy and one of the founders of
the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit when announcing
this scholarship in his honor.
Ireson received his bachelor of arts degree from DePauw
University, Greencastle, Ind., master of divinity degree from
Garrett-Evangelical, and doctoral degree from Manchester
University in England.
Ireson was elected top staff executive of the United
Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry in 1987. Since
that time he has played a vital role in higher education at the
university and seminary levels in this country and has given
strong leadership in relating the United Methodist Church to the
new Africa University in Zimbabwe and to the church in Russia,
Fisher said.
"We look forward to developing the scholarship so that it may
assist men and women in the future who prepare themselves in mind
and spirit for service to God and all humanity."
