Disciple Bible Study enters third
phase with record setting numbers
by United Methodist News Service
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- People's hunger to study the Bible and
find direction in their lives has propelled the Disciple Bible
Study series into a third phase with record setting numbers.
There are 32,457 people participating in "Remember Who You
Are," the third Disciple series. The 32-week study of the prophets
and the letters of Paul was released in August, and officials are
calling the numbers "a first-year record."
The study, produced by the United Methodist Publishing House,
is a 34-week disciplined small-group Bible Study designed to
develop Christian leaders. It carries participants on an intensive
exploration from Genesis to Revelation. Other studies take
students deeper into selected scriptures.
Since its introduction in 1986, more than 400,000 people have
completed the foundation study, "Disciple: Becoming Disciples
Through Bible Study." More than 18,000 youth have been involved,
nearly 4,500 people have completed the study in Korean and 355
people have participated in the Spanish version. In addition, more
than 101,000 graduates have gone on to the second phase,
"Disciple: Into the Word Into the World."
According to Wini Grizzle, Disciple coordinator at the United
Methodist Publishing House, the numbers reflect people from
congregations of all sizes and many denominations. The numbers
also reflect both ethnic and age diversity. "The common
denominator is their hunger to study the Bible and find direction
for their lives and their ministry," she said.
The Disciple program also has become international -- now
available in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New
Zealand, Germany, Switzerland, South Africa, South Korean,
Singapore and Malaysia. The resources currently are published in
Spanish, German, Chinese and Korean languages.
"God is indeed working through this study," Grizzle said.
"Lives and congregations are being transformed and people are
becoming biblically nourished Christians with a commitment to
servanthood and discipleship."
