CONCORD, N.C.--Barber-Scotia College has won its two-and-a-half-year battle
to regain good standing with the Southern Association of colleges and
Schools (SACS). President Sammie Potts said Dec. 10 that, after a year of
probation and 18 months of warning before that, the historically black
college is no longer under SACS sanctions. SACS imposed the sanctions on
the 129-year-old school because of ballooning debt that approached $3
million at one point. The debt is down to $1.8 million and school leaders
hope to eliminate it in a little at three years. The sanctions could have
cost the school its accreditation and that would have meant losing the
federal grants and scholarships on which the school relies to stay open.

BRISTOL, Tenn.--Dr. Richard J. Stanislaw, King College president, announced
during a Dec. 11 meeting of the college faculty that he is resigning
effective May 31, 1997. Stanislaw, who took a leave of absence on Dec. 18,
became president of King College in 1992, following a post as academic dean
at Taylor University in Upland, Ind. "The college has come to a point that
I can move into another career area with a sense of accomplishment,"
Stanislaw said. "I expect to continue my career in higher education, in
administration or in my academic field of music. Also, my wife, Becky,
whose Ph.D. is in English (Literature), will be able again to teach at the
university level." The King College board of trustees has named Dr.
Gregory D. Jordan provost and acting president.

DANVILLE, Ky.--Centre College is one of five colleges chosen from across
the nation to receive a Presidential Leadership Grant of $150,000 from the
John S. And James L. Knight Foundation, based in Miami. The grants were
given to reward and encourage creative leadership at private liberal arts
colleges in the United States. The other selected colleges are Denison
University of Granville, Ohio; Eckerd College of St. Petersburg, Fla. (also
PC(USA)-related); Smith College of Northampton, Mass.; and Swarthmore
College of Swarthmore, Pa.

CARLINVILLE, Ill.--Blackburn College's fall Phon-A-Thon set a record for
dollars pledged to the college's Annual Fund, vice president for
development Alan Adams announced recently. The intensive two-week
telephone campaign had a goal of $100,000, and when the final night's tally
was made, the total amount pledged was $100,665. Last year's goal was
$90,000 and Adams explained that the 11 percent increase was a "stretch and
a challenge for the callers, but everyone knew how important the Annual
Fund is and they made a special effort to go over the top." Most of the
money pledged to the event is unrestricted and can be used where it is most
needed, such as bridging the gap between tuition revenue and actual
operating costs.
