Urban convocation
set for San Francisco

                 by United Methodist News Service

A national urban ministry convocation is planned Nov. 22-25
at the Downtown Marriott hotel in San Francisco.
The event is sponsored by the United Methodist Board of
Global Ministries and the denomination's National Urban Strategy
Council.
The Rev. John Schol, the board's executive for urban
ministry, said he is particularly hoping to attract new pastors
and lay people. "We're really looking to impact congregations and
communities locally," he explained. "We think the way to do that
is to get people who are new and fresh."
Capacity for the event is 1,500 people. "We anticipate it
will be oversold," he added.
The focus is around a new plan for urban ministry called
"Holy Boldness." The plan "urges the church to boldly coordinate
local, conference and general church resources and take holy risks
in the name of Jesus Christ to transform congregations and
communities."
The convocation opens with registration at 11 a.m. Saturday,
Nov. 22 and concludes after the 9 a.m. strategy sessions on
Tuesday, Nov. 25. Keynote speakers are scheduled each evening.
Participants will either select a track, which includes six
hours of workshops and activities, or choose two workshops, one
briefing and a creativity session. They also select two luncheon
sessions.
The themes to be explored are urban theology, evangelism and
congregational development, community development, eradication of
racism and other forms of oppression, leadership development,
multicultural relationships, wholeness, health and healing, and
San Francisco and Holy Boldness resources.
Luncheon speakers and topics include Tony Campollo, Eastern
College professor and community economic developer, on "The Church
in the Streets;" the Rev. Minerva Carca¤o, Perkins School of
Theology professor, on "The Urban Church in the 21st Century;" San
Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, who is United Methodist, on "Urban
Policy and the Church;" Bishop Felton E. May of Washington, D.C.,
on "Seek the Shalom of the City;" Garlinda Burton, Interpreter
Magazine editor, on "Gender, Race and Opportunities for Ministry"
and Bishop Kenneth Carder of Nashville, Tenn., on "Holy Boldness,
the Churches Call for the 21st Century."
Several different registration packages are available. For
information, call (800) 887-3818.
