The United Methodist Church's Task Force on Korean-American
Ministries met to organize for 1997-2000 and choose officers Jan.
23-24 in Atlanta.
The 29 task force members include four bishops, R. Sheldon
Duecker, Hae Jong Kim, Roy I. Sano and Ann Sherer. In addition to
the bishops, task force members include four lay women, four lay
men, four clergywomen, four clergymen, four transgenerational
clergy, one representative from the churchwide Commission on the
Status and Role of Women, one from the Commission on Religion and
Race, and three representatives from the Board of Global
Ministries.
Authorized by the 1996 General Conference, the task force
drafted a mission statement that says the group is "to make
recommendations to the 2000 General Conference in order to
strengthen and further the present and future Korean-American
minstries" in the United Methodist Church.
The group elected Bishop Hae Jong Kim, New York West Area,
president; Song Ja Park, Pasadena, Calif., vice president; the
Rev. Chongho Kim, Evanston, Ill., secretary.
The task force will meet twice a year during 1997-1999 and
once in Spring 2000.
