COCU Leads, "Fidelity and Chastity" Trails
as Amendment Voting Remains Close
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--With 18 presbyteries having reported as of Jan. 21, voting
on Amendment B (the so-called "fidelity and chastity" amendment) and
Amendment C (enabling actions for the Consultation on Church Union) remains
very close.
According to the official tally maintained by the Office of the
General Assembly (OGA), 10 presbyteries have voted in the negative on
Amendment B, with eight voting in the affirmative. The numbers on Amendment
C are the same except that it is passing, with 10 presbyteries in favor and
eight opposed.
A majority of the 171 presbyteries -- 86 -- must vote in the
affirmative for the amendments to be incorporated into the "Book of Order."
To ensure complete accuracy, the Presbyterian News Service will only
report those presbytery votes that have been formally filed with OGA.
