NCC1/21/97 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 21 ---- The Rev. Dr. Joan
Brown Campbell, General Secretary of the National
Council of Churches, today expressed her thanks to
all who have expressed their concern and prayers for
her after she suffered chest pains yesterday (Jan.
20) at the beginning of the Inauguration Day
interfaith worship service.

Dr. Campbell was taken from Metropolitan A.M.E.
Church to George Washington Hospital, where she was
examined. Doctors there determined that she had not
suffered a heart attack. She was released and
encouraged to rest for the rest of the day Monday,
and that she was free to resume her normal
activities on Tuesday.

Today (Tuesday) she is back at work in the
NCC's Washington Office, and expects to return to
New York this evening.
